The Science of Anthropometric Estimation (U.S. Navy Method)
The U.S. Navy body fat formula was developed by Dr. J.A. Hodgdon and P.R. Beckett in 1984 to provide a reliable, low-cost screening tool for military personnel. By combining height with neck, waist, and hip circumferences, the algorithm models body volume and density with a standard error of estimate of approximately 3% to 4% compared to dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and hydrostatic weighing.
The South Asian “Thin-Fat” Phenotype
Extensive clinical studies highlight that people of South Asian descent frequently carry a “thin-fat” metabolic phenotype: standard or low BMI, accompanied by higher visceral adipose tissue and lower skeletal muscle mass. This is why scale weight alone is misleading for Indian adults — tracking body fat percentage and waist circumference provides a significantly more accurate picture of cardiovascular and metabolic fitness.
Body Recomposition: Gaining Muscle While Losing Fat
Rather than starving yourself on extreme low-calorie diets that shed water and hard-earned muscle, the true goal of modern training is body recomposition. By combining heavy progressive resistance training with a high-protein diet (1.6 to 2.0g per kg of lean mass) and a controlled 300–500 kcal deficit, you can decrease fat mass while preserving or even building active lean muscle tissue.
