BMI Calculator for Indians

Asian-Indian consensus thresholds identify increased metabolic risk at lower BMI values than the general international categories, so this calculator uses the adult Indian screening bands.

It also estimates your daily calorie needs, protein starting point, and healthy weight range. These values are educational estimates, not medical advice.

Why Indian BMI Thresholds Are Lower

Research and Indian consensus guidance recognise that metabolic risk can appear at lower BMI values in Asian-Indian adults. BMI remains a screening measure and should be considered with waist circumference, health history, and clinical assessment.

For practical screening, this page uses the Asian-Indian bands:

  • Underweight: BMI below 18.5
  • Normal: 18.5–22.9
  • Overweight: 23–24.9
  • Obese Class I: 25–29.9
  • Obese Class II: 30 and above

The result is a screening guide, not a diagnosis.

BMI is a Starting Point, Not the Whole Picture

BMI cannot separate muscle from fat. A muscular athlete may appear “overweight”, while someone with low muscle and higher body fat may appear “normal”. Combine the number with:

  • Waist circumference — commonly below 90 cm for Indian men and 80 cm for Indian women
  • Body-fat percentage — through a reliable scan or assessment
  • Resting heart rate — lower values usually reflect better cardiovascular fitness
  • Blood markers — such as glucose, HbA1c, lipids, vitamin D, and B12

If your result is outside the healthy range, use it as a reason to build a consistent plan rather than as a label.

What Your Calorie + Protein Numbers Actually Mean

BMR: the estimated energy your body uses at complete rest.

TDEE: your BMR adjusted for movement and training.

Protein target: a practical daily starting point to support muscle and recovery.

Healthy weight range: the weights that place your BMI inside the Asian-Indian normal band.

Recalculate after a meaningful body-weight or activity change.
